The RS 500 Gul Winter Championships were blessed with perfect Spring weather. Eleven boats turned up from as far afield as YDSC 'up North' and TBYC 'down South' to enjoy a weekend of thrills and spills in the warm sunshine (but very cold water!). There was very close racing from the first race on Saturday dominated by Alex Taylor and Bryan Mobbs (Budworth SC) and Andrew and Elizabeth Palmer-Felgate (Burghfield SC), both teams never falling below second position during the day's racing. Martin and Barbara Smith (Delph SC) led the third race until the final lap but couldn't hold the pace and fell back to third position.
After the day's racing competitors were entertained by watching a video of the racing with a few dodgy gybes and interesting capsizes caught on camera. Tom Peel, doing the race training, gave us tips on mark roundings and the importance of sailing with your battens the right way round! Three more races were held on the Sunday which was a much gustier day with the inevitable capsizes but superb screaming downwind legs. Jonathan Lister and Terry Pressdee (Yorkshire Dales SC) found the sailing conditions much more to their liking and led the fleet in the first two races and did not drop below a final second place all day.
After two races back to back a very tasty hot lunch was served in the galley. The challenging conditions proved too much for some of the competitors and a depleted fleet of 6 boats started the final race. In the really gusty conditions the action was again dominated by Taylor/Mobbs who took first place overall. At the prize giving Alex Taylor thanked Northampton Sailing Club for a thoroughly enjoyable weekend.
