RS500 GUL Grand Prix
Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th July saw the fourth and final event of the Gul RS500 Grand Prix Series of 2010. The 500s 200s and 800s arrived at Eastbourne Sovereign SC to a very warm welcome in every respect.
A turnout of two regular 500 event attendees were joined by two ‘Try an RS 500’ takers, James and Erica, more used to sailing a Laser 4000, and Paul and Deborah, also experienced in a range of boats, and then on the Sunday also joined by regular challengers Tim and Heather.
The 800s went off to the west towards Beachy Head and the 500s and the 200s headed East along the coast to share the same course.
Saturday was a good day to be sailing, with 15 knots of breeze gusting 20 later and a strong tide, making for a long beat and a surfing reach for the leeward gate, which seemed to be over in a matter of seconds! Three back to back races were run very efficiently with the exception of the small fleet of 500s having to be very patient whilst the 30+ 200s went about their string of general recalls and black flag starts. The 200s starting first meant that there was the additional challenge of navigating through the slower 200s at some awkward points! The RS500 National and European Champions Alex and Bryan weren’t significantly threatened in any of the three races but there was some very good sailing to be enjoyed by all!
Sunday morning saw a strong sea breeze of 20 knots, which would build to a steady 24 and gust to around 30, and, of course, the arrival of Tim and Heather. The first race had Alex and Bryan in the lead throughout, with Tim and Heather in hot pursuit, followed by the Morleys and the Bradburys. Race 5 saw a similar result without the Morley’s who were exhausted and heading for the club bar. Race 6, and at last a change of position, with Tim and Heather ending their short weekend trip to the coast with a victory.
Alex and Bryan headed back North with a five out of six wins and 1st place overall – well done chaps.
Many thanks to ESSC for a great weekend. Next stop The RS500 Worlds. Hope to see you there!
