Results / Gul RS200 Nationals Looe SC - 20/08/2009

 

Day five of the RS200 Gul sponsored national championships saw a classic, final day showdown, that will be remembered for a long time to come.

 

At launching time, the breeze was peaking 30 knots and a lumpy sea had formed, so the fleet was detained ashore for 2 hours.  By 2pm though, with only two hours left in which to get a race in (the last race has to start by 4pm), the wind had moderated enough for the fleet to be released.

 

After one false start, the fleet got away at the second attempt.  Initially, the left looked good, but a 20 degree right hand shift saw the leaders come in from that side.  James Stewart/Tobytastic led at the windward mark and sped off downwind, establishing a lead they held to the end.  Behind, Geoff Carveth/Emma Clarke were in second, which would be good enough to win the championships as James Peters/Alan Roberts, the main challengers, were down the pan.  However, Peters/Roberts picked up some great shifts on the second beat to round the last windward mark just a few boat lengths behind Carveth/Clarke.  However, with just one downwind leg left, it was to little to late and Carveth covered Peters to ensure he couldn’t get past.  This allowed Dave/Jane Hivey to sneak through to second in the race, with Ian Martin/Chris Catt in third.

 

Overall, Geoff Carveth/Emma Clarke were worthy champions, showing good consistency across a range of conditions.  Peters/Roberts pushed all the way to finish second overall, and will surely have many more opportunities to win this event, while  Martin/Catt had a great week to take third in their first nationals sailing together.

 

The silver fleet was won by Katrina Gilbert/Jenny Rust in 18th place overall, with Mike Chapmand/Lynne Ratcliffe second and Rob Style/Helen Rollinson third.  Tom Morris/Emma Porteous won a tight race to take the bronze fleet title, with Stephen Tiernan/Sarah Hickman second and Darren/Natalie Roach third.
