Class Association
This year, we are looking forward to the RS500 Worlds, RS100, RS400 and RS Aero Europeans, and RS200 and RS300 Gold Cup 2016 being held as part of the epic Travemunde Woche Regatta on 25th - 29th July 2016. This will be an exciting event set amongst the festival activities and entertainment that takes place throughout the week on the white sandy shores of the Baltic Coast in Lubeck, Germany.
This historic regatta and festival has been running for 125 year, attracting about 1 million visitors to its many events around the town. The shore-side organisation and racing is run very professionally, with German precision and there are beer and sausages everywhere! Think ‘Cowes Week’ for dinghies, with extra: great location; welcoming smiles and buzzing shore-side activities of unimaginable variety. The Germans are famous for their efficient organisation anyway, and when you consider that this is the 127th annual Travemunde Woche you’ll appreciate that they’ve had time to polish the product.
The RS 2016 Championships will be using the Grünstrand area, at the northern end of the beach promenade. A flat grass strip (think town park, not farmers field) 400m long by 75m wide fronting the promenade is set aside for the fleet. This will include dinghy parking, toilets, showers (free), parking for motorhomes (€17/night with electrical hookup) and camping (€6/night). There’s a further 250m of beach frontage for boat park & camping for other classes. Launching is easy, and the race courses will be straight out approx. 1.5km from the beach.
The entry fee before 1 July €285/boat (around £215) for double-handers and €230 (around £174) for single-handers to include all racing, lots of goodies, and a party on the squarerigger „Passat“ in Travemuende hosted by the city of Luebeck.
For UK entrants, there are Volvos up for grabs. Everyone entering by 1 July will be entered into a draw for a fabulous Volvo to be delivered to your door, full of fuel for your journey to Germany.

Travemunde will be a brilliant experience for both sailors and non-sailors. The river front and beach promenade, over a kilometre in total, are thronged with stalls and stands selling unimaginable things. Fast and slow food from North German country restaurants to Far East street kitchens. Fine wine, sweet crepes and lots of beer. There is a spectacular firework display and laser show every night. There was live music of all styles and kinds every few hundred metres with several large professionally lit stages and a couple of beach clubs on the sand. At the centre of it all is the SAP Sail Cube on the beach with tiered seating, where professional commentary and graphics overlay the action displayed on a large screen relayed from film crews on the water. Each evening the river port is closed for an hour to allow one class at a time to race, with live commentary, under the noses of the thousands of spectators lining the promenade. For those with children, it is a paradise. As well as sandy beaches, there are loads of free activities from little ones including things like circus activities, high wire adventure and bungee trampolines. Seriously – you need to be there.
