RS 200 SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIPS AT STONEHAVEN
The 2002 RS200 Scottish Championships was hosted this year by Aberdeen
and Stonehaven Yacht Club over the weekend of 15/16th June . Located near
the harbour in Stonehaven , this was the first visit of the RS200 fleet
to North East coast fishing village and made a refreshing change from the
usual venues . The RS200 fleet were among 200 boats visiting Stonehaven
for the ASYC's annual regatta . A very busy start line with 7 starts and
very brisk conditions gusting upto 29knots on the Saturday was certainly
not for the feint hearted .
In the RS200 Championship, things looked very open between the leading
contenders. In a ten boat fleet, Richard and Val Evans, from Chanonry,
opened with a win from Graeme Henry and Shona Redpath, with Katie
Masterson and Fiona Foulkes in third. Henry then went one better to win
the second race, and establish a good overnight lead, while the Evans
plunged to eighth. Most of the other contenders carrying one poor result,
leaving Henry well set up for the morning.
He duly continued his very consistent set of results with a second place
behind Richard and Val Evans, bouncing back after their second race
disappointment.
This left a close contest between the Evans, with two wins but one high
score, and Henry, with just one win but no worries on discards.
After sharing the lead during the early half of the final race Henry
finally pulled out a winning lead from the Evans who would have been
second if a mix up over shortened course signals had not lost them 3
places to end up fifth. Henry therefore took the Championship by a
comfortable three points from the Evans. A second place for Katie
Masterson pulled her up into third place.
Thanks to ASYC for hosting the Championships for the RS200 fleet and also
to Alan Henderson for letting us plagiarise his report for the RS
website .
