ALLEN RS 500 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
DAY 1
After the excitement of the practice race on the Sunday in fantastic sunshine and 12 knots of breeze, the fleet took to the water on an over cast morning and a weak 5 knot northly…….which promptly died as we circulated the starting area.
The race committee persisted as the wind swung south and the ora threatened to kick in, but after an hour we gave up and postponed till 4. At 4 the fleet started taking to the water just as the mother of all lightning storms kicked in. with people running for cover as the rain pored down it was clear we weren’t going to get any racing in today.
Tomorrow is forecasting bright sunshine, so things are looking up, with 4 races planned and an early start the cheese and wine party is unlikely to go on all night…..
DAY 2
An early start on day two was well worth getting out of bed for. The RS500s were greeted with 25knots from the north in the middle of the lake (although we needed a tow from the beach to get there). This was not necessarily good news for all, as the traditional RS500 cheese and wine party the previous night had claimed a few scalps, it was good to see all nationalities drinking together though and the ice was definitely broken.
Race one was a screamer with Brian and Alex in GBR 799 zooming of to a huge lead, so big that half the fleet failed to finish in the time limit. Race two was closer but went the same way. The Germans thought this was fantastic, as they had never raced before, they just liked going fast, their dreams had come true and they now definitely had the racing bug.
On race three the wind started to die and after flying up to the windward mark the fleet promptly parked at the spreader, the race was abandoned and lunch was served.
This gave some of the Italians a chance to recover from their hangovers. The ora threatened to build but could only manage a poor 6 knots from the south. This made races 3 and 4 slow tactical affairs with some close sailing and a change of leaders.
